Generally, you must use upcasts when defining collections that contain disparate types If you don t use an upcast, the compiler will infer that the collection has the type of the first element and give a compile error if elements of other types are placed in the collection The next example demonstrates how to create an array of controls, a common task when working with WinForms Notice that you upcast all the individual controls to their common base class, Control: open SystemWindowsForms let myControls = [| (new Button() :> Control); (new TextBox() :> Control); (new Label() :> Control) |] An upcast also has the effect of automatically boxing any value type Value types are held in memory on the program stack, rather than on the managed heap Boxing means that the value is pushed onto the managed heap, so it can be passed around by reference.

Let s use the pygame.mixer.music module to create a simple jukebox. Listing 10-6 reads in a list of Ogg files from a path on your hard drive and displays a number of familiar hi-fi-like buttons that you can use to play, pause, or stop the music and move through the list of tracks (see Figure 10-6). If you change the MUSIC_PATH value at the top of the listing, you can make it play from your own collection. The jukebox uses the pygame.mixer.set_endevent function to request an event to be sent when a track finished playing. Pygame doesn t provide an event for this, but you can easily create one of your own by using an id value that is greater than USEREVENT (a constant in pygame.locals). Listing 10-6 uses the id TRACK_END, which has the value of USEREVENT + 1. When the TRACK_END event is detected in the main event loop, it starts streaming the next music file so that the tracks are played sequentially.

First, you must specify that you will be using the NUnit framework in this class: using NUnit.Framework; Next, you specify that this class is a testing class. In Listing 7-1, this is indicated by the [TestFixture] attribute above the class declaration. This is how NUnit is able to determine that this class is intended as a test class. A class that is tagged as a test fixture needs to contain at least one test case indicated by a method with the [Test] attribute above the method signature. If the test class has more than one test case defined, each test case will be run in the order specified in the test class. The test class may also contain other special NUnit methods that are tagged with identifying attributes above their method signatures. Two such methods are declared in Listing 7-1: a setup method and a teardown method.

The following example demonstrates how to box a value: let boxedInt = (1 :> obj) A downcast changes a value s static type to one of its descendant types; thus, it recovers information hidden by an upcast Downcasting is dangerous because the compiler doesn t have any way to determine statically whether an instance of a type is compatible with one of its derived types This means you can get it wrong, and this will cause an invalid cast exception (SystemInvalidCastException) to be issued at runtime Due to the inherent danger of downcasting, many developers prefer to replace it with pattern matching over NET types, as demonstrated in 3 Nevertheless, a downcast can be useful in some places, so a downcast operator, which consists of a colon, question mark, and a greaterthan sign (: >), is available The next example shows you how to use downcasting: open SystemWindows.
